Infallibility, Popes as God?
58
Well, now we come to the real sticking point. The big controversy among all who even know who the pope is. The issue of PAPAL INFALLIBILITY....
Many would ask, "How could the church maintain a statement so politically uncorrect even until the modern era?" That the pope can make decisions which contain absolute truth is very foreign and uncomfortable to modern society. Many would also ask, "How can you possibly believe in that?" I myself struggle with this topic and ironically: so does the pope!
To highlight a particular papacy (and I'm going for the one that people know most about) I would like to point out a few things about the election and papacy of John Paul II.
With full knowledge that he would have the responsibility of carrying on the church of Christ he rejected the papacy for several hours after the election was complete. He begged the curia to find a more appropriate candidate but the College of Cardinals insisted. After a few moments of prayer in the private papal chapel he then entered what is now known as the "Room of Tears" where he exchanged just that for the papal garb.
I may sound like I am glorifying this process and I can't make you believe anything but there is no harm in telling you. There can be one irrefutable fact of the nature of his commitment to the church: his motto: totus tuus (in English: all for you).
Throughout the catechism that I learned as a very young child, I remember one lesson. To obey parents, teachers, religious and other authority figures, UNLESS, they are acting outside of the teachings of Christ. That clears up the entire infallibility issue for me.
There is no one that I will ever follow away from the teachings of Christ. I would disobey king, president, priest, bishop, cardinal and most definitely Pope if he acted in a manner or exercised infallibility while not in accordance with the only truth, Jesus Christ.
Infallibility comes from Christ and if Christ is not within the pope, neither is infallibility.
I pray on behalf of us all that this pope and those in the future speak, act and live Christ.
Emitte Lucem Tuam Et Veritatem Tuam
